On May 16, 1990, Jim Henson died. It’s been twenty-two years, and it’s still very sad.

Without a doubt, I would not be who I am or have accomplished what I have without him. Aside from my family that raised me, no single person has done more to shape me than Jim Henson. His work ethic, his creativity, his generosity, and his zest for life and silliness continue to inspire me to try become a better person every day.

While writing Ascend, the third book in the Trylle series, I listened to this song from Labyrinth on repeat over and over again:

Jim Henson remains my inspiration and my hero, and I’m sure that I’ll miss him as much today as I will in twenty-two years.

(p.s.You liked the movie Willow? There is a 3 book sequel to it by George Lucas and Chris Claremont. They are titled “Shadow Moon,””Shadow Star,” and “Shadow Dawn.” I hope you can find them and get a chance to read them. They are a must for any “Willow” fan, or even a fan of fantasy genre.I found copies for sale on Amazon and Ebay. This is multi-posted on your Facebooks and now here in hopes of you seeing it.I hope you don’t mind.)

How can you listen to songs with lyrics when you write? (I tried and cannot do it, the lyrics severely interfere with the part of my brain that is writing and composing the words. I tried some instrumental music, classical-like Beethoven, but even that is a tad too distracting. For me silence works best.)

Jim Henson was Amazing… And he was so Young when He died… I Remember the day… I was so Bummed out… For me it was George Lucas, he’s the Reason I pursued Film Making… And though I’ve Shifted over to Writing, My Stories and Characters are still Very Influenced by Him… Well Developed Characters, and Grand Story Scope… He is Awesome… And I even Forgive him for the Ewoks, Lol

  • Hi Amanda,

I have been wanting to do my research into your incredible self- publication story for a while now and look forward to exploring this blog – I was amused by the fact that Batman is your favourite character – he’s my top character of all time as well and similarly, I’m hoping the upcoming finale to Nolan’s trilogy is the movie of the century! – Don’t need to hope though, it will be.

Since you indicate that most questions can be answered through the FAQ, I’ll take a look, but I imagine I’m going to have my own questions!

Look forward to talking to you.

  • Amanda,

Can you recommend a good book about Jim Henson. I am particularly interested in his work ethic that influenced you so much.

Beautiful tribute, Amanda. Truly he was a great man.
I loved Sesame Street and The Muppets as a kid and just recently discovered the wonders of Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. There was no end to the man’s talent, his gift to the world. RIP Jim Henson.

  • Wow. It’s amazing how somebody can be gone for more than 20 years and still be loved and remembered.

  • That was a very thoughtful post and I’m glad you found inspiration through him.
