Hearts & War

I like Valentine’s Day. I don’t understand why people hate it. Of the 27 years that I’ve been alive on this planet, I’ve had a boyfriend on exactly 2 Valentine’s Days, and I still love it.

Part of that may be because I live in Minnesota, and by the time February 14th rolls around, I’m sick of being cold and depressed and it’s always dark and I look for an excuse to buy flowers and look at pink hearts. I’m also not adverse to rom-coms.

I should confess that I rarely spend Valentine’s alone, even though I don’t have a boyfriend. And spending Valentine’s with your friends is about ten billion times spending it with boyfriends. Friends are fun and silly and don’t care that you want to go see This Means War almost entirely because you like looking at Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. Friends also don’t judge if you eat a entire box of chocolate by yourself or if you put on sweatpants when you get home instead of a thong. (In fact, my friends probably prefer if I put on sweatpants instead of a thong.)

To me Valentine’s Day is a day to have fun and act girlie and remind the people that you care about that you do in fact care about them. Nothing about that sounds depressing to me. It just sounds like a good time.

P. S. I am actually going to see This Means War tomorrow with a few of my pals. Expect some type of review on this tomorrow or the next day, because man, do I dig Tom Hardy.

this is interesting, an interesting opinion. However, we (in Russia) now have a Valentine’s Day are more like a formality. But I remember when I first heard about this day in 1987, we are still pupils at school at the time of Valentine’s Day told a teacher of English. And with some trepidation I waited every year this holiday, a girlfriend to write a valentine card :)).
    (sorry for bad english)

Good post. I concern on gucci outlet because I love cheap gucci shoes very much.

  • Nice piece – I just wrote a blog post about how love has become overly romanticized by a legacy of poets and writers overselling it like a tub of cheap candy.
Love is hard and tough and you gotta get lucky to get it on. I blame Shakespeare!

I wish they all could be Minnesota giiirls…

  • I can’t wait to see what you think of the movie! I’ve been dying to see it for the exact same reason – and also The Vow because Channing Tatum (who I refer to in my head as “Yummy Tater”) is in it…

It’s not that I hate Valentine’s Day — I don’t — but the fact that it’s pretty pointless. I don’t see having one day to profess or celebrate my romance. I do that every day — we all should. Kinda the same way that I feel the whole “Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward Men (and women-persons, according to God in ‘Oh God’)” thing is a bit pointless at Christmas — that should be practiced year round, not just one month a year. Or giving thanks for one day in November when we should be giving thanks for the blessings we have **every** day.

    It’s a me thing, I guess.

Tom Hardy, Yes, yes! Sound like you know how to spend your holiday. I just think it’s another calendar holiday where you feel pressured into spending it the way the media and marketing thinks you should – wrong.

Valentine’s day is just one day of 365 days where our passion for living is increased and expressed directly to someone else.

You’re right Amanda: spending time with friends on Valentine’s Day rules. It’s especially nice when your girlfriend happens to be your best friend. 🙂

And, um, there are worse things to get your sweetheart than a free copy of my paranormal romance, Deadly Reflections: http://www.amazon.com/dp/b006n4ysvy It’s Free through Thursday. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
